Handling SMTP errors

Occasionally we see SMTP connection errors - either our server or our SMTP provider, who knows. But instead of being handled gracefully we get the big red PHP error screen.

Not sure if it retries, or if there is a setting for that?

I found a case from 2014 that I suppose has never been addressed.
